Here in the Pacific Northwest we are surrounded by plants, a spectacular natural beauty, but how can we learn to identify them!? A possibly surprising answer, art! Botanical drawing is the creation of artwork inspired by the traits of plants, and is a fantastic way to learn what a species really looks like. Because making artwork depicting a subject requires one to spend time examining that subject, drawing our native plant species is a great way to get to know them more intimately.
This workshop is designed for families and individuals of any age with the goal of teaching plant identification through creative works. During the course of this 3-hour workshop, we will spend some time observing Northwest species and drawing and painting these species using pencil and watercolor as a medium. The instructor will provide basic identifying features for each plant and provide guidance on manifesting those features on paper. The course will take place in several areas of Yost Park, and participants should be prepared for any type of weather. Paints, Pencils, and Paper will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own supplies.
